When my sister brought Nuri, our little pup, home, it was one of the most exciting moments in our lives. Its curious eyes, tiny paws, and little tail! But it also came with a learning curve for us. We were so focused on feeding, playing, and training that we didn’t realize that grooming must be a top priority. A grooming session for a puppy at regular intervals is essential for both its health and comfort.

In this blog, I will share all the details about when and how to groom your puppy for every parent. Let’s begin.

Puppy Grooming

Why Is Grooming Important for Your Puppy?

At first, we thought grooming was just about keeping a puppy looking cute, but it’s so much more than that. A grooming session for a puppy is crucial to maintaining their overall health. Regularly, for basic grooming, you can brush your puppy’s coat at home, which is very important to remove extra dirt and loose hair from their body. Yes, your puppy may squirm and try to nibble at the brush, but you must be patient and consistent to make this basic grooming for your pup a calming activity. Regular brushing prevents matting, which, if left unchecked, can lead to painful skin infections. It also helps distribute natural oils, keeping puppies’ coats shiny and healthy.

Another thing we didn’t initially realize was that dental care for puppies is also very important. Just like humans, puppies can suffer from dental disease, which can lead to infections that may even affect their heart and kidneys. So, brush your puppy’s teeth with dog-friendly toothpaste and a toothbrush to remove all the unwanted diseases and keep them healthy.

Another essential grooming aspect is nail trimming. Long nails can cause pain and even affect a puppy’s posture. We were terrified of cutting too deep the first time we trimmed my puppy’s nails. So, we started slow, clipping just the tips, and always had treats on hand to make it a positive experience.

Puppy Grooming

Do You Need to Visit a Professional Groomer for Your Puppy?

Honestly, we handled basic grooming at home. For extra care and grooming sessions, we always book a professional so that our pup can be comfortable and complete the entire session without any stress.

You can appoint a professional groomer when your puppy is around 12 weeks old. But always try to introduce your puppy to its groomer before it reaches four months of age because, at this age, puppies are still open to new experiences.

Most importantly, not all groomers will be the perfect fit for your puppy. So, always do research, check online reviews, and ask fellow pet parents for recommendations. Besides, visit the salon beforehand and make sure the facility is clean and sanitized and the staff is friendly and experienced.

Another thing I want to share here is something we have learned from my experience. Keep things simple during your puppy’s first appointment, like a bath, nail trim, and ear cleaning. Make sure not to make a big fuss when dropping him off to avoid unnecessary anxiety.

Puppy Grooming

Pet Grooming Services and Their Importance

Professional groomers provide many services, many of which we never considered before getting a puppy. Here are some of the key services and why they matter:

  • Bathing: This helps remove dirt, allergens, and excess oils. Groomers use puppy-specific shampoos to maintain the skin’s natural balance.
  • Nail Trimming: Overgrown nails can be painful and lead to posture issues. A groomer ensures they are trimmed safely.
  • Teeth Cleaning: Some groomers offer tooth brushing services, helping to maintain your puppy’s oral health.
  • Ear Cleaning: This prevents infections by removing wax buildup and debris.
  • Hair Trimming: Certain breeds require regular trimming to keep their fur from getting tangled or matted.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a new puppy parent, I highly recommend starting grooming routines early. Be patient, use positive reinforcement, and remember that consistency is key. Whether you groom at home or visit a professional, ensuring your puppy is comfortable with the process will make a world of difference in their overall well-being.

Looking back, I’m so glad that we prioritized grooming from the start. Not only has it kept my puppy healthy, but it has also created some of the sweetest moments between us. So, grab that brush, some treats, and enjoy this special time with your pup!

For all animal lovers, creating your own little sanctuary is a dream. The most sought-after combination of pets is cats and dogs. Skeptical? It’s actually a common and beautiful occurrence—if they are introduced responsibly and gradually develop a bond. The companionship, emotional support, health benefits, and friendship you’ll experience are truly enlightening. These animals become part of the family, providing unconditional love.

Cats, known for their independence and playful nature, and dogs, admired for their loyalty and energy, each bring unique qualities to a household. While they require care, attention, and training, the joy and companionship they offer make pet ownership a rewarding experience for millions worldwide.

Preconceived Notions About Cats and Dogs

We’ve all heard the saying, “Fighting like cats and dogs.” It’s a very common phrase that fuels the myth that cats and dogs can’t coexist peacefully in the same home. Many believe that dogs will always chase cats and that cats will always be terrified of dogs. Some even fear that keeping both under one roof is a recipe for disaster. But is that really the case?

In reality, the success of a multi-pet household depends on several factors, including the pets’ personalities, their past experiences, and how well they are introduced to each other. With patience, proper training, and understanding, cats and dogs can not only live together but also form strong bonds. So, if you’re dreaming of having cats and dogs peacefully coexist at home, rest assured—it’s entirely possible!

Understanding the Behavioral Differences Between Cats and Dogs

To keep cats and dogs together at home peacefully, it’s important to understand their fundamental behavioral differences.

When I brought home a playful little puppy, I already had an 8-month-old cat who had confidently ruled the house. At first, I thought, They’re both pets—how hard could it be? But the moment they started sharing space, I quickly realized just how different they were.

Undoubtedly, Dogs Are More Social Than Cats:
Dogs thrive in social groups and often look up to their humans as their leaders. They are more likely to follow commands and enjoy companionship.

Cats Are Territorial and Independent:
Unlike dogs, cats prefer having their own space and may take longer to warm up to new companions. They rely heavily on their environment to feel secure.

They Have Different Play Styles:
Dogs tend to be more boisterous, which may overwhelm a cat. Conversely, cats prefer stealthy, calculated movements, which could trigger a dog’s chasing instinct.

Their Communication Is Different:
Dogs wag their tails when happy, whereas a wagging cat’s tail often signals irritation. Misreading these signals can lead to unnecessary conflicts.

My cat, the queen of the house, loved her space and quiet routine, while my puppy was a ball of energy, eager to play. Their instincts clashed—his excitement felt like an attack on her. The first days were filled with barking, hissing, and cautious stares. And I soon realized they wouldn’t adjust overnight. So, it’s essential to understand their natural behaviors to keep cats and dogs together peacefully.

Cat and dog

Factors That Influence Their Relationship

Several factors determine how well cats and dogs can coexist peacefully at home. These include:

  • Age: Puppies and kittens are more adaptable than older pets. Early socialization increases the chances of a positive relationship.

  • Breed Tendencies: Some dog breeds have a higher prey drive, making them more likely to chase a cat. Similarly, certain cat breeds are more social and open to canine companionship.

  • Previous Experiences: If your dog has had a bad encounter with a cat before (or vice versa), it might take longer for them to trust each other.

  • Individual Temperament: Even within the same species, every pet has its own personality. A calm and patient dog will adjust more quickly than a hyperactive or aggressive one.

Tips to Keep Cats and Dogs Together Peacefully

When I introduced my 8-month-old cat to my puppy, I took a slow approach. I had heard horror stories of rushed introductions causing fear and aggression, so I took my time, and I’m glad I did. Here are some practical tips I’ve learned from my personal experience:

  1. Establish Safe Spaces and Resources
Cats and dogs should have designated spaces where they can retreat when needed. Cats, in particular, appreciate vertical territory—like cat trees or shelves—where they can observe the dog from a safe distance. Ensure both pets have separate food and water bowls, litter boxes, and beds to prevent resource guarding.

  2. Socialization and Slow Introduction Are Very Important
Never force an introduction. Instead, follow these steps:

    • Keep them in separate rooms for the first few days, allowing them to get used to each other’s scent.

    • Let them see each other through a baby gate or a cracked door before any face-to-face meeting.

    • Gradually allow supervised interactions, rewarding calm behavior with treats.

    • If either pet shows signs of stress or aggression, take a step back and try again later.

  3. Balance Attention and Affection
It’s easy to unintentionally favor one pet over the other, especially when introducing a new animal. Make sure to spend quality time with both, reinforcing positive behavior. A jealous pet is more likely to act out, so ensure each gets enough love and attention.

Cat and dog

Potential Challenges and Tips for Positive Interactions

Most of my pets have always been curious, especially my dogs and kittens. When I introduced my kittens to my dogs, they took a while to acclimatize, but with consistent, gentle instructions and patience, they became the best of friends—sometimes even partners in mischief.

Due to their differing social behaviors, introducing cats and dogs can be a challenge. Dogs, especially energetic breeds like my Boxers, may chase my ginger cats out of curiosity or playfulness, causing stress for the cats. Similarly, a territorial cat may react aggressively to a new dog, leading to conflicts. These conflicts may involve food, a litter box, or simply their personal space.

Another challenge is the difference in communication; dogs wag their tails when happy, while cats may do so when irritated. Food aggression can also arise if they attempt to eat from each other’s bowls.

To ideally foster positive interactions, introduce them gradually in a controlled environment.

  • Use baby gates or leashes initially to allow safe observation.

  • Provide separate spaces where each pet can retreat when overwhelmed.

  • Keep their eating, bathing, and toileting areas separate to ensure privacy and space.

  • Positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, helps them associate each other’s presence with good experiences.

  • Patience is key, as it can take weeks or even months for a peaceful coexistence to develop.

Establishing Routines to Keep Cats and Dogs Together Stress-Free

Like any interactions, establishing consistent routines is key in interspecies households. Cats and dogs thrive on predictability, and routines help them feel secure and reduce anxiety. Here are some strategies to maintain a stress-free environment for both pets:

  • Feed them at the same time but in separate areas: This prevents food aggression and allows both animals to feel comfortable while eating. Ensure that each pet has their own designated eating spot.

  • Maintain a consistent schedule for walks, playtime, and naps: Dogs especially benefit from structured routines, which can help reduce their energy and anxiety. When cats and dogs know what to expect, they’re less likely to feel threatened by the other’s presence.

  • Respect their boundaries: Give both pets the space they need when they show signs of stress or desire for solitude. If a cat wants to retreat to a high perch or a secluded corner, allow them that space without intrusion.

  • Encourage calm behavior: Reward both pets when they interact calmly with each other. Praise, treats, and playtime are excellent motivators for good behavior.

By incorporating these practices into daily life, you can help create a peaceful, balanced home where cats and dogs live harmoniously. It’s important to be patient during the adjustment period and to remain consistent in your approach.

The Joy of Watching Cats and Dogs Bond

Over time, the bond between cats and dogs can grow stronger. I’ve seen it firsthand—my cat and puppy eventually became the best of friends. They now play together, snuggle during nap time, and even comfort each other when one is feeling anxious. It’s a rewarding experience to witness them coexist peacefully and share their lives with one another. When cats and dogs become friends, they provide one another with emotional support and companionship, just as they do for their humans.

In conclusion, while the journey of introducing cats and dogs into the same household requires patience, understanding, and time, the rewards are well worth the effort. With the right approach, both animals can thrive together, offering each other love, companionship, and mutual respect. So, if you’re considering adding a dog to your home with your cat (or vice versa), remember—it’s entirely possible for them to develop a beautiful bond that enriches your entire family.

Stop Puppy From Biting – Is It A Normal Behavior?

Bringing a puppy home is one of the most comforting experiences ever; every dog parent can feel this. I still remember the day when my sister and I brought our furball Nuri (his name) home—awwwww! Those big, curious eyes, the wiggly tail, and the adorable way he stumbled over his own paws. It felt like our hearts had grown a size bigger. But let me tell you, nothing quite prepares us for those sharp little teeth!

At first, we thought, “Oh, they’re just nibbling. How cute!” But soon, it became clear that our hands, shoes, and even the edges of my furniture were fair game. Those playful nips turned into full-blown chewing marathons. We found ourselves asking, Why does my puppy bite so much? Is this normal?

Yes, it’s a normal part of their growth, but trust me, sometimes it can also be frustrating. Through trial and error and a lot of patience, we finally discovered how to guide our Nuri through this phase.

In this article, I’ll share what we’ve learned to stop a puppy from biting. I hope you’ll feel confident and prepared while navigating those early days with your new furry companion.

Stop Puppy from biting

Know Why Puppies Bite First

It’s important to understand that biting is completely normal for puppies. In fact, it’s part of the natural development of their teeth and sometimes serves several purposes.

1. They Want To Explore the World

Much like human babies, puppies use their mouths to explore their environment. For them, every bite or nibble is an experiment to gather information about the texture, taste, and resistance of the object in question.

2. Teething Troubles

At around 12 to 16 weeks of age, puppies start teething as their adult teeth grow in. This process can be uncomfortable, leading to an increased desire to chew on anything within reach. Just like human babies find relief in teething toys, puppies benefit from appropriate chew toys during this stage.

3. Playing Behavior

Biting is an integral part of play for puppies. Whether they’re playing with their littermates or with you, they use their mouths to communicate. Through these interactions, puppies learn “bite inhibition”—understanding how hard they can bite without causing pain.

How To Stop Your Puppy From Biting?

Here’s how you can address biting based on the situation:

If Your Puppy Is Chewing on Belongings

  • Schedule Activities: Ensure your puppy has a balance of exercise, mental stimulation, and rest. Overexcited or overtired puppies often resort to chewing as an outlet.
  • Provide Appropriate Chew Toys: Keep a variety of puppy-safe toys handy. When you catch your pup chewing on something inappropriate, calmly redirect them to one of their toys and praise them once they engage with it.
  • Puppy-Proof Your Home: Keep items like shoes, cords, and other tempting objects out of your puppy’s reach.

Stop Puppy from biting

If Your Puppy Is Teething

  • Invest in Teething Toys: Choose toys specifically designed for teething puppies. Popular options include:
    • Puppy teething rings
    • Puppy chew freezer dog toys
    • Puppy teething bones
  • Supervise Playtime: Always monitor your puppy when it chews on toys to ensure it doesn’t swallow small pieces.
  • Offer Frozen Treats: Freeze a damp washcloth or a carrot for your puppy to chew on. The cold helps soothe sore gums.

Stop Puppy from biting

If Your Puppy Bites During Play

  • Pause Play: If your puppy bites too hard, immediately stop playing. Leave the area or create a brief barrier, such as stepping behind a gate. Return after about 30 seconds with a toy to resume play.
  • Avoid Encouraging Nipping: Do not use your hands or feet as play objects. This could confuse your puppy into thinking it’s acceptable to bite.
  • Encourage Rest: Overstimulated puppies can become bitey. Ensure they have a quiet, comfortable space to nap.

Tips To Stop Puppy From Biting

Always remember that training a puppy requires patience, consistency, and understanding. Here are additional tips to help you and your puppy succeed:

1. Use Positive Reinforcement

Praise and reward your puppy for engaging with appropriate chew toys or playing gently. Positive reinforcement builds trust and encourages desired behaviors.

2. Avoid Harsh Corrections

Physical or verbal punishment can backfire, leading to fear or even aggressive behavior in your puppy. Instead, focus on redirecting their energy and rewarding good behavior.

3. Introduce Socialization Classes

Puppy socialization classes are a great way for your pup to interact with other dogs in a controlled environment. These classes teach valuable lessons, such as bite inhibition and appropriate play.

4. Set Boundaries

Teach your puppy early on that biting is not acceptable. Use consistent cues like “no bite” in a calm but firm tone when they nip. Pair this with positive reinforcement when they stop or redirect their attention.

Happy puppy

If you’re in the biting phase with your puppy, hang in there. It’s challenging, yes, but it’s also an opportunity to build trust and create a bond that will last a lifetime. Remember, you’re not just teaching them how to behave; you’re also showing them that you’ll always be there, no matter what. And trust me, one day, you’ll look back at this time with a smile, proud of how far you and your puppy have come together.

Pet Abuse

Singapore is renowned for its strong legal framework, urban efficiency, and high standard of living however, behind the nation’s progressive image lies an ongoing issue: pet abuse and neglect of pets. Despite strict laws and public awareness campaigns, cases of pet abuse continue to surface, shedding light on the darker side of pet ownership in the city-state. This article explores the nature of pet abuse in Singapore, its causes, the impact on animals, and the measures being taken to address it.

Pet Abuse

Understanding Pet Abuse in Singapore

Pet abuse encompasses a range of actions, including physical violence, neglect, abandonment, and exploitation. Reports of dogs being beaten with sticks, cats thrown from buildings, and pets left in extreme conditions without food or water highlight the severity of the issue.

In Singapore, abuse often manifests in the following forms:

  • Neglect: Many pet owners fail to meet their animals’ basic needs, such as providing adequate food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Neglect is the most common form of abuse and often goes unnoticed until the animal is in severe distress.
  • Physical Abuse: Intentional harm, such as hitting, kicking, or injuring pets, is less frequent but more visible. These cases often spark public outrage due to their brutality.
  • Abandonment: Some pets are abandoned in parks, forests, or even HDB corridors when their owners find them too burdensome. Without survival skills, these animals often face starvation, illness, or accidents.
  • Exploitation: In some cases, animals are exploited for financial gain. Illegal breeding operations, where pets are kept in inhumane conditions, are a pressing concern. Female animals are often overbred, leading to severe health complications.

Pet Abuse

Causes of Pet Abuse

  • Lack of Awareness: Some owners do not fully understand the responsibilities of pet ownership. Misconceptions about animals’ needs or behaviors can lead to neglect or unintentional harm.
  • Stress and Frustration: High-stress environments, financial difficulties, or personal frustrations may cause individuals to lash out at their pets.
  • Irresponsible Ownership: Impulse buying of pets, often influenced by trends, results in owners being unprepared for the long-term commitment. This is particularly common with exotic pets or breeds that require special care.
  • Profit-Driven Breeders: Illegal breeders operate in secrecy, prioritizing profit over animal welfare. These breeders often neglect the health and living conditions of the animals in their care..

Pet Abuse

Impact of Pet Abuse on Animals

The effects of abuse are devastating for pets, both physically and psychologically. Animals subjected to abuse often suffer from:

  • Physical Injuries: Broken bones, malnutrition, untreated wounds, and chronic illnesses.
  • Psychological Trauma: Fear, anxiety, and mistrust of humans. Abused pets may display signs of depression or aggression, making rehabilitation challenging.
  • Shortened Lifespans: Due to prolonged suffering or delayed medical intervention, many abused pets succumb to their injuries or illnesses.

Legal Framework and Enforcement

Singapore has implemented strict laws to protect pets and deter abuse:

  • Animals and Birds Act: This legislation makes it an offense to mistreat, neglect, or abandon pets. Violators face fines of up to SGD 15,000, imprisonment for up to 18 months, or both (Singapore Statutes, 1965, S.23).
  • Penal Code Provisions: Cases https://sso.agc.gov.sg/Act/ABA1965involving extreme cruelty, such as intentional killing or maiming, are addressed under the Penal Code, which imposes harsher penalties (Singapore Statutes, 1965, S.375; .
  • Licensing and Regulation: All pet breeders and sellers must be licensed and meet specific animal welfare standards. Regular inspections ensure compliance (Singapore Statutes, 1965, S.5).
  • Animal Welfare Groups: Organizations like the SPCA and ACRES work alongside authorities to investigate and report cases of abuse, provide shelter for rescued animals, and advocate for stricter enforcement of laws (Singapore Statutes, 1965, S.12).

Pet abuse in Singapore is a troubling issue, but it is not insurmountable. With robust laws, active welfare groups, and an engaged community, significant progress has been made in protecting animals. However, more work is needed to ensure that every pet in Singapore is treated with the love and care it deserves.

By staying vigilant, reporting crimes, and fostering a culture of compassion, Singapore can continue its journey toward becoming a truly humane society.

Growing up with dogs is a privilege some people have. I was fortunate to experience that in my life. I grew up with a pair of Boxers who were mother and daughter. Coincidentally, the daughter was born around the same time as me.

I loved my dogs, Rebecca and Stephanie. The love, care, fun, and protection a Boxer provides is an experience that lasts a lifetime and teaches us to be more humane.

Rebecca was as protective of me as she was of Stephanie, and Stephanie was my first friend. The bond I had with them is something I will cherish forever. It’s been more than a decade since they both passed, but their memories and love continue to help me move forward in life.

This is a little guide I’ve put together to help you take care of your Boxer. These are a few tips and tricks I’ve learned that made my Boxers livelier than most.

Boxer Dog

1. Heat Management

Managing heat is the most important aspect of caring for Boxers, as they need a cooler space to thrive. This ensures they are not fatigued by the hot weather.

  • Limit Outdoor Activity: Boxers are prone to heat exhaustion, so avoid taking them out during the hottest parts of the day. Early mornings or late evenings are ideal for walks.
  • Cool Indoor Environment: Ensure your home is well-ventilated, and consider using air conditioning or fans to keep your Boxer comfortable. Boxers are prone to breathing difficulties, so keeping them cool is essential.
  • Hydration: Provide plenty of fresh water throughout the day. Keep water accessible both indoors and during outdoor activities.

2. Exercise

Boxers are energetic and need regular exercise to prevent boredom and maintain good health.

  • Regular, Moderate Exercise: Daily playtime, mental stimulation, and moderate exercise are key.
  • Indoor Activities: On very hot or rainy days, consider indoor play like fetch in an open space or puzzle toys to keep them entertained and active.
Many Boxers enjoy watching TV and listening to music. I loved watching animated movies with mine.

3. Living Space and Environment

  • Space Requirements: While Boxers adapt well to apartment living, they are medium to large dogs and benefit from having space to move around.
  • Bedding: You can choose a ready-made bed, futon, mat, or custom non-heating mat/futon for your Boxer. They’ll enjoy it, but on hot days, they might prefer sprawling on a cool floor.
  • Avoid Rough Surfaces: Boxers have short coats and are prone to skin issues, so provide comfortable, clean bedding to protect their skin.

If you have plants, ensure they’re not poisonous or pollen-producing, as this can cause respiratory, skin, and digestive issues.

Plants to avoid include:
Grass pollen (Bermuda and Timothy), poison ivy, oak, sumac, aloe vera, philodendron, dieffenbachia, pothos, sago palm, tulips, daffodils, azaleas, foxglove, rhododendrons, oleander, cedar, oak, maple, wild mushrooms, and fungi.

Even though aloe vera has healing properties, ingestion can cause digestive upsets in Boxers.

4. Diet and Health

  • Balanced Diet: Boxers need a balanced, nutritious diet tailored to their energy level and activity. Consult a vet for recommendations, especially if they have allergies or sensitivities.
    • Protein: Saltless bone (beef/chicken) soup and rice are staples 2–3 times a week. This strengthens their immune system. Make sure the food is well-cooked and monitor their eating habits.
    • Fruits: Seedless watermelon, apples, bananas, blueberries, and mangoes (without pits) can be occasional treats. Always consult your vet.
    • Commercial Dog Food: Use age-appropriate options like Pedigree in recommended amounts.
  • Veterinary Care: Schedule regular vet visits and keep up with vaccinations. Pay special attention to conditions like hip dysplasia and heart issues.

5. Socialisation, Training, and Mental Stimulation

  • Socialise Early: Boxers are friendly and social. Early socialisation helps them adapt to various people and environments.
  • Trust Their Instincts: Boxers are perceptive and can sense danger or unusual behaviors. Trust their instincts—they’re usually right.
  • Consistency is Key: Use clear and consistent commands for training. Boxers thrive on structure and routine.
  • Mental Stimulation: Use interactive toys, training sessions, and socialisation with other dogs to keep them mentally engaged and reduce unwanted behaviors.

6. Mating

Boxer puppies are adorable and fun to have around, but taking care of the mother and newborns is crucial during the mating, pregnancy, and post-delivery periods.

  • Health Screening: Conduct thorough health checks and genetic testing to rule out hereditary issues like hip dysplasia and heart problems.
  • Climate Control: Provide a cool, well-ventilated space, as Singapore’s hot climate can stress pregnant Boxers and their puppies.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Follow Singapore’s AVS licensing requirements for breeding and ensure all procedures comply with animal welfare standards.

With attention to climate, health care, and living conditions, Boxers can thrive as loving and loyal companions for up to 15–17 years.

Growing up in a tropical region like India, I understand that not every amenity may be feasible. However, a fan, affordable food, water, vet visits, and love can go a long way in ensuring that your Boxer lives a long and fulfilling life with you.

The Pet Times was thrilled to be invited to Hong Kong to interview Yannie Wong from Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR). Through our conversation, we learned about the inspiring story behind HKDR and their tireless efforts to save, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs in need. Here’s a closer look at this remarkable organisation and its impact on the community.

In 2003, HKDR was founded with a mission: to save dogs and puppies from the Hong Kong Government’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres. Over the years, HKDR has expanded its reach, rescuing dogs from various sources and providing them with a chance at a new life. Today, the organisation has rescued, cared for, and rehomed more than 10,000 dogs and puppies, relying almost entirely on private donations, sales of HKDR merchandise, and fundraising events. Proudly a No Kill Organisation, HKDR ensures that no dog under its care is euthanised unless it is the only humane option.

A Brief History of HKDR

Sally Andersen, the founder of HKDR, was inspired to start the organization after moving to Lamma Island in 1986 and discovering numerous stray dogs abandoned in the area. These dogs, left on a small island in the bay where Sally lived, were believed to have come from fishing boats or fish farms. Some were adult dogs, while others were puppies. Sally began rescuing and rehoming these dogs on her own. Eventually, HKDR secured purpose-built kennels in Pokfulam, leading to the formal establishment of the organization. This allowed them to rescue more dogs, particularly those from government-run Animal Management Centres.

The 3Rs: Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome

HKDR operates on the principles of Rescue, Rehabilitate, and Rehome.

Rescue

Initially, HKDR focused on rescuing dogs from AFCD, the only authority in Hong Kong with the power to capture and rehome animals. All of these dogs were on “death row” due to the AFCD’s policy of euthanizing unclaimed animals after a short period. However, over time, HKDR’s rescue efforts have expanded to include dogs from various sources.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is a cornerstone of HKDR’s mission. The organization ensures dogs receive comprehensive vet check-ups and medical care, covering all costs. Volunteers play a crucial role by regularly socializing with the dogs, helping them adjust and build confidence. HKDR also raises funds for necessary surgeries and treatments, ensuring every dog has the opportunity to be healthy and happy. They emphasize the importance of preventive care, such as flea and tick prevention and heartworm prevention, which many dog owners in Hong Kong often neglect.

Rehome

Rehoming dogs at HKDR involves pairing them with families that match their personalities and exercise needs. The organisation uses a colour-coded system to indicate each dog’s temperament: green for friendly dogs, yellow for dogs with slight behavioural issues, and red for extra strong dogs that need experienced handlers. This system helps volunteers and potential adopters understand and respect each dog’s individual needs. Additionally, HKDR provides compulsory training for volunteers and holds training classes for  adopters and their dogs to promote responsible pet ownership.

A Day in the Life of a Volunteer

Volunteers are the lifeblood of HKDR, offering essential socialisation and exercise for the dogs. While the shelter is quieter during weekdays, necessitating hired staff for consistent care and medical attention, the volunteers fill critical roles. Staff members often work long hours and stay overtime to ensure the dogs receive the necessary care. Beyond direct dog care, volunteers contribute to photography, marketing, and fundraising—vital tasks for an organization that operates without government funding. New volunteers must pass a walk test to demonstrate their ability to handle dogs in diverse environments, ranging from the bustling city to the more tranquil rural shelter in Tai Po.

Boogie’s Story

Boogie, a nine-year-old dog rescued in March 2024, arrived at HKDR with limping legs and a timid demeanour. Initially, Boogie would scream in pain when approached and seemed very fearful. A vet check revealed that Boogie needed surgery on both legs, with costs amounting to HKD $50,000. Despite the challenges, HKDR raised the necessary funds, and Boogie underwent surgery. Over time, Boogie’s health and confidence improved significantly, thanks to the dedicated care from HKDR volunteers. Now, Boogie is ready for a retirement home where he can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable life!

The Culture Shift in Hong Kong

Interest in adopting local dogs in Hong Kong is growing, with more people paying attention to stray and injured dogs. While the culture is gradually shifting towards a greater appreciation for mongrels, some still seek pure breeds. HKDR highlights the unique traits and special personalities of mongrels, encouraging potential adopters to consider these resilient and loving dogs. In 2023, HKDR rescued 482 dogs and rehomed 455, but as a No Kill shelter, they still care for around 600 dogs, with more than half being mongrels.

Hong Kong Dog Rescue has made remarkable strides since its inception in 2003. Through its dedication to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs, HKDR has transformed the lives of thousands of dogs and inspired a culture of responsible pet ownership in Hong Kong. The organisation’s success is a testament to the power of community, compassion, and commitment to a worthy cause.

Welcoming a new pet into your home is an exciting and rewarding experience. However, being a pet owner also comes with responsibilities. For first-time pet parents, it can be overwhelming when shopping for your new companion. By preparing for your pet’s needs, you’ll be able to ensure that they acclimatise to their new environment and have the right supplies. In this article, we’ll guide you through the essential pet supplies that every owner should have.

1. Food and Water Bowls

One of the first items on your shopping list should be food and water bowls. The bowls can be as simple as two ceramic or stainless-steel bowls. Stainless steel bowls are often recommended because, compared to plastic bowls, they are less likely to harbour bacteria, are easy to clean and are durable. Pet stores usually carry everything from raised bowls to filtered water bowls, so you can definitely find something you’d like.

2. High-Quality Pet Food

To keep your pet healthy, it is important to provide the right amount of nutrition in their diet. It might be overwhelming for first-time pet owners to consider the array of pet food options at the pet store. You might be tempted to buy the first high-quality food you come across. However, keep in mind that some pets have special dietary needs, like food allergies, or need a different type of food. You can consult with a veterinarian on what type of food is best for your pet.

3. Pet Beds

Just like us, our pets would also love a comfortable place to relax and sleep. Your dog or cat needs a bed that is soft, supportive, and easy to wash. Observe the type of surface your pet decides to sleep on. Some prefer plush and cushioned beds, while others prefer a firmer surface. For smaller pets like hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs, provide appropriate bedding materials that are safe and non-toxic. For older cats and dogs, you should provide the necessary cushioning for their joints.

4. Carriers

Pet carriers is an essential item for your pets, especially when travelling on long journeys or a trip to the vet clinic. There are many types of pet carriers on the market. Some are capsule backpacks, shoulder carry-ons and even strollers. It’s important to look for carriers that fit your pet and are easy to clean, well-ventilated, and secure.

5. Collars, Harnesses, and Leashes

Another must-have item for your dog or cat. Collars, harnesses and leashes come in a wide range of varieties. There are standard leashes, retractable leashes, long-line leashes, and reflective collars. Harnesses are often preferred for walking. They provide more control and reduce strain on your dog’s neck. There are also countless options when it comes to collars, most owners personalise them with tags to identify their pets if they get lost. For cat collars, consider a break-away collar in case the collar gets snagged on something while climbing.

6. Grooming Supplies

Grooming is required to keep your pet’s coat from getting tangled and matted. Grooming supplies may include brushes, combs, nail clippers, shampoos, and conditioners. Regular brushings can reduce the amount of fur and dander in your house. You can find a variety of brushes such as bristle brushes, wire brushes, de-shedding brushes, and even glove brushes when you go online or visit a pet store. Cats, dogs, and even some smaller pets benefit from regular grooming sessions like checking for any signs of skin issues or parasites.

7. Toys and Enrichment Items

Pets require mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Toys are not just for entertainment for your pet; they are necessary for your pet’s general health. While cats usually love scratching posts, feather wands, and laser pointers, dogs may prefer interactive puzzles, balls, and chew toys. Small animals like rabbits and hamsters like tunnels, chew toys, and climbing structures. Toys that stimulate problem-solving and foraging are essential for birds. Always choose toys that fit your pet’s size and playing style to avoid choking hazards.

8. Litter Boxes and Cleaning Supplies

A litter box is a necessity for anyone who owns cats. It would help if you chose a litter box that is both the right size for your cat and easy to clean. While some cats might prefer open boxes, others might like covered ones. You will also need a scoop and maybe a litter mat to keep the area tidy. For other pets, like rabbits or birds, you might need similar items for their habitats. You can also choose to have cleaning supplies such as pet-safe disinfectants and odour eliminators to maintain a clean environment for your pet.

9. Pet First Aid Kit

Accidents and emergencies can happen, so it’s important to have a pet-specific first aid kit on hand. You can buy a ready-made kit for your pet or set up one yourself. A good pet first aid kit should include the following basic supplies:

  • Gauze rolls
  • Bandage material
  • Medical tape (to secure gauze and bandages)
  • Povidone Iodine swabs
  • Alcohol disinfectant
  • Antiseptic towelette
  • Sterile gauze pads
  • Cotton balls
  • Tweezers

It would be best to have the contact information of your vet clinic and the nearest emergency animal hospital readily available.

10. Pet Identification and Microchip

In case your pet gets lost, proper identification can make all the difference in bringing them home safely. Make sure the ID tag on your dog or cat has your contact information on it. It’s also very advisable to microchip your pet since it offers a permanent form of identification. Make sure the microchip registry has your most recent contact information.

Conclusion

Having the proper supplies is essential to providing your pet with a comfortable, happy and healthy life. Pet ownership can be more enjoyable for you and your furry (or feathered, or scaly) friend if you are well-prepared with everything from basic essentials such as food and water bowls to speciality items such as grooming supplies and first aid kits. You will be well on your way to providing a caring and supportive environment for your new companion by investing in quality supplies and keeping your pet’s needs in mind.

Travelling is a great way to explore new places and cultures, but the idea of leaving your furry friend at home can dampen the excitement. Many pet owners face several challenges whilst traveling to different places including managing pet supplies, food, water and waste disposal which can be logistically difficult to mitigate, especially on long strenuous journeys or in remote areas. Travelling with pets can also incur additional costs such as transportation fees and veterinary expenses for health certificates and vaccinations. That’s why be it traveling via flight or a road trip, it is essential to do prior research to keep your pets as comfortable as possible. Luckily, we’ve got you covered, with these essential 10 tips you can learn how to plan a stress-free and enjoyable trip for you and your pets.

Why are more people travelling with pets:

Taking your pet on vacation can seem apprehensive, but it can also be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for you and your pet. Travelling with pets allows you to spend quality time with them and strengthens your bonds. Additionally, there are more accommodating pet services such as pet-friendly hotels and restaurants, making the travel journey much easier than it was before. With more people working remotely from home or having flexible working arrangements, there is more leeway to embark on a great voyage with your pet. Travelling with pets can reduce stress, promote physical activity and even enhance the overall well-being and mood of you and your furry friend.

Tips for travelling with your furry friend:

  1. Plan Ahead: Preparation is key to a successful trip! Start by researching pet-friendly accommodations and check the pet policies for airlines or other transportation services to avoid any last-minute difficulties. Adding on, research pet-friendly dining options at your destination. Many cafes and eateries provide outside seating areas where pets are welcome to stay, with some even offering special menus for your pet. This way, you don’t have to forfeit spending time with your pet whilst immersing yourself in the local cuisine.
  2. Get a pet passport: Just like when entering or exiting immigration with a passport, all travelling pets need a passport to travel. A pet passport is an official document allowing your cat or dog to travel internationally with you. The passport contains veterinary health certificates, microchip identification, import license and permits. This ensures your pet is all cleared for travel. Check with your visiting country on any specific requirements your pet needs before entering the country. If your pet is not a dog or cat, you will need special permits depending on your visiting country.
  3. Try investing in Pet Insurance: Pet Insurance can be a valuable investment in your travel journey ensuring your pet’s health and well-being whilst offering peace of mind and financial coverage of any accidents that may happen on the trip. By carefully selecting your preferred coverage option and cost for your pet, you can travel safely knowing that the best possible care is available for your furry companion.
  4. Veterinary Check-up: Before embarking on your journey, schedule an appointment with your local veterinarian to ensure your pet is in good health for the trip. Update vaccinations, get a health certificate if necessary and discuss any potential travel-related concerns with your vet. Your cat or dog needs to be microchipped with updated details as well.
  5. Train your Pet for Travel: Before you start your trip, ensure that your pet has gotten used to the different aspects of travel. An example can be practising long car rides in preparation for an upcoming road trip or allowing them to familiarise themselves with their pet carrier to expose them to various environments and ensure that they are at ease throughout the journey. Furthermore, positive encouragement and reinforcement through treats or snacks can help them associate travel with a more positive and happier experience.
  6. Packing lists: By creating a packing list for your pet, you will be much more able to relax on your trip, knowing you have all your essentials. Such items on the list can include a collar with an ID tag with your contact information, a comfortable carrier for your pet, or even collapsible food bowls that are fantastic for saving space.
  7. Maintain a routine: Try to maintain your pet’s regular feeding and exercise schedule as much as possible, this can help keep your furry friend calm and comfortable during the trip.
  8. Bring Familiar Food: While it might be tempting to pick up pet food along the way, it’s advised to stick to your pet’s regular diet to prevent digestive issues. Sudden changes in diet can cause discomfort or stress to your pet.
  9. Know the Local Pet Laws: Familiarise yourself with the local pet laws in your arrival country. Some places may have certain leash laws, quarantine requirements or vaccine requirements so by staying on top of it, you and your pet can have a stress-free trip.
  10. Use portable pet toilets: For longer trips, consider taking a portable pet toilet with you. These can be incredibly helpful for dogs and cats, allowing them to relieve themselves without waiting for a rest stop, this makes travel much more convenient because your journey time isn’t affected by constantly taking stops for your pet.

To conclude, travelling with your pets can be anxious for some owners but with proper preparations and managing expectations, you can be on the road with your furry friends on your next trip. Keep in mind your pet’s safety, supplies and official documents. Preparing your pet to travel far will need months of preparation but it will be rewarding knowing your pet is with you at the end of your journey. Happy travels!

Whether you’re considering adopting a dog or purchasing one from a responsible breeder, bringing a dog home is life changing. While it will mark the beginning of a beautiful journey filled with love, loyalty and a lifetime of memories, the decision to welcoming a dog home should not be taken lightly.

To be sure, dogs, which have a lifespan of between 10 to 13 years on average, are a lifetime commitment. American journalist and writer John Grogan said it beautifully once: “Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.” He should know, being the author of the best-seller Marley & Me, an autobiographical book about his family and their lovable labrador retriever, Marley.

But I digress.

Before welcoming your dog home (and I promise, he or she will be the best member of the family you’ll ever have), here are some key considerations.

Key Things to Take Note of – Especially if it’s Your First Time Welcoming A Dog Home.

Make sure you are committed to welcoming a dog home

Before you even consider factors such as the dog’s size and energy level, you have to make sure that you are in this for the long run. Having a dog is the same as having a child!  They should not be gotten rid of just because you’ve decided that they don’t fit in with the décor one day. Plus, dogs are known for their incredible sense of loyalty towards their owners. As a dog owner myself, I can guarantee that this is no exaggeration.

Know your reasons

Again, before going to the shelters or the pet store, know why you want a dog. If it’s to give you companionship, you’ve got it. If you’ve always wanted one and now have the means (i.e. your own house and income) to have one, by all means. But if you’re getting a dog just because you have children who have asked for us, please reconsider, especially if you are a first-time owner. With the latter, I suggest visiting a friend with a pet and learn more about the ins and outs of being a dog parent. Alternatively, you may visit the shelters to interact with dogs and understand the various commitments needed to have one. The shelters, which are constantly looking for volunteers, will welcome the visit and help.

Assess your lifestyle

Dogs need time to settle in – whether they’re adopted or not. As such, you should look at your lifestyle and determine whether you have the time, space and energy for a dog. (they do need to have their daily walks at least once a day). Once you have ascertained that you have what it takes, you’ll need to consider other factors. Factors like the dog’s size, temperament, energy level, exercise needs, grooming needs, and more.

Make sure you can afford welcoming a dog home

Having a dog doesn’t exactly come cheap. Beyond its meals (kibbles, cooked food and supplements to name a few) your dog will also need a quality collar, harness, dental care, bedding, treats, toys and more. Then there are the vet visits (regular vaccinations and emergency visits at times) and grooming sessions. There’re more, but these are the basics, really.

Choose a name

This is self-explanatory, but you may be surprised. The possibilities are endless, ranging from the simpler “Peanut” and “Milo” to more sophisticated-sounding names like Winston, Archibald, Lily and Ella.

Get chipped

Accidents happen. Getting your dog microchipped is one way to ensure that your pet can be found again if he or she gets lost. Make sure he or she has a tag with your details too, so you can be contacted if the worst happens.

Be patient

Dogs are just like children. You’ll have to be very patient with them, especially when they’re new to your home. If you’ve adopted or got a puppy, you’ll need to first puppy-proof your home and carve out an area for your pup to feel safe in. Then, you’ll have to toilet train them. Like babies, relieving themselves in the toilet does not come naturally to puppies. Unlike babies, they have no diapers on 24/7. You can choose to have your pup relieve him or herself outside or within a spot indoors. If he or she does the job correctly, shower praise and reward him or her with treats.

Having a puppy is also like bringing a newborn home. He or she is in an unfamiliar environment and may feel uncomfortable. Before retiring for the night, try wearing him or her out with pre-bedtime exercises such as a stroll. Consider conducting crate training, which will help your pup associate the space with comfort and bedtime. To do so, avoid leaving your puppy in his or her crate for too long periods of time.

If you can, rub a piece of cloth or t-shirt from its old home and leave it with your pup, especially if he or she is sleeping separately. The smell will help soothe him or her to bed. Alternatively, leave your smelliest, unwashed t-shirt or blanket with him or her.

Never leave your dog outside

Like people, dogs need love and plenty of interaction. Leaving your dog outside would be plain cruel, especially in bad weather. In the same vein, never leave him or her locked in a car when you’re outside too. With the rising temperatures these days, a dog locked within a hot car can be lethal.

Provide plenty of love and affection

As I alluded to in my introduction, a dog is more than a pet. He or she is a member of the family and should be treated like one. So don’t stinge on the affection and cuddles. After all, life is short; your pet’s life is even shorter.
