Introduction on Therapy Dogs

Embark on a thrilling journey into the world of therapy dogs in Singapore, where canines bring joy and create deeper connections with humans. Join a therapy dog and their pawrents as they volunteer with Therapy Dogs Singapore (TDS), an incredible group committed to spreading canine happiness wherever they go. Learn how these furry therapists bring comfort to hospices like Assisi Hospice, nursing homes like MWS Bethany Nursing Home .

The Adventures of a Therapy Dogs

Pawmum, with her heart set on contributing to a bigger community, decided we should join this noble cause. After a successful temperament test, we dove headfirst into volunteering.
TDS carries out visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and learning institutions. So far, since June, our visits have taken us to some of them and every interaction is a tail-wagging experience. During these visits, I make sure to keep my cool, not letting wheelchairs, canes, or unique movements faze me. Getting along with everyone, from the little children to the wise elders, is my specialty.
Each visit is a treat and it is a heartwarming reminder that us doggos bring not just temporary smiles and laughter. We have a knack for permanently touching the lives of others, sprinkling happiness wherever our paws take us.
Now, for those wondering, there are different types of therapy dogs. I have been assessed to have a suitable temperament and be comfortable in different environments. Although I am not a service dog (or other specific purpose dogs), I can still get to interact with different people and dogs in various settings.

The Impact of Therapy Dogs

Their roots trace back to Florence Nightingale’s observation in the late 1800s. She noticed that furry friends helped reduce anxiety and aid in recovery. Nightingale wrote in her book Notes on Nursing (1860) that “a small pet is often an excellent companion for the sick.”
Fast forward to today, therapy dogs like me can help improve humans’ well-being and encourage deeper connections.
We’re not just cuddly creatures; we bring affection and comfort through activities or just our presence. In essence, we’re four-legged therapists spreading joy and healing one paw at a time.

Conclusion

Therapy dogs in Singapore are an integral part of improving well-being and creating deeper connections. Join the adventure of a therapy dog and their pawrents as they spread canine joy through visits to hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and learning institutions. Experience the heartwarming impact of these furry therapists, who bring comfort, happiness, and healing to individuals in need. Discover the power of these dogs as they touch lives and make a positive difference one paw at a time.

Explore the captivating world of the Maine Coon cat, known for their impressive appearance, friendly temperament, and intelligence. Learn about their origins, playful personalities, special care requirements, and fun facts. Consider welcoming a Maine Coon into your home for boundless love and companionship.

Introduction to the Maine Coon Cat

Discover the majestic world of the Maine Coon cat, the gentle giant of the feline world. Known for its bushy tail, tufted ears, and friendly nature, the Maine Coon cats are a beloved companion worldwide. Uncover the intriguing history of this breed and why they earned the nickname “gentle giants.” Explore their purposeful paws and playful personalities, as well as the special considerations required for their care. Consider inviting a Maine Coon cat into your home for a rewarding and loving experience.

Origins of the Maine Coon Cat

The history of the Maine Coon cat is as captivating as the breed itself. While their exact origins are shrouded in mystery, there are several charming tales that attempt to explain their beginnings. One popular legend suggests that Maine Coons are the result of a romantic rendezvous between domestic cats and raccoons, hence their bushy tails and tufted ears.

A more plausible explanation traces their lineage to seafaring captains who brought longhaired cats aboard their ships to control rodents. When these ships docked in Maine ports (US), these cats mingled with local felines, eventually leading to the development of the Maine Coon breed. Whatever their origins may be, Maine Coons quickly became cherished members of households in the rugged landscapes of Maine, earning them the nickname “gentle giants” for their large size and gentle nature.

Purposeful Paws and Playful Personalities

Maine Coons were originally prized for their mousing abilities, but today they are beloved companions known for their playful and affectionate personalities. Despite their imposing size, Maine Coons are gentle cats who adore human company and thrive in households with children and other pets. They’re not only great hunters but also expert cuddlers, often earning the title of “dog-like” due to their loyalty and sociability. They will follow their humans everywhere at home, and will want to be part of everything they do, including cooking, bathing, cleaning!

These felines are also renowned for their intelligence and problem-solving skills. Don’t be surprised if your Maine Coon learns to open doors or fetch toys—it’s all part of their clever nature! They enjoy interactive toys and puzzles that challenge their minds and keep them entertained. They are also easy to be leash-trained and enjoy outdoor walks!

Special Considerations for Maine Coon Cat Care

      • Grooming: Regular grooming is essential to prevent mats and tangles in their thick fur. Brush your Maine Coon at least a few times a week, paying special attention to their undercoat.

      • Nutrition: Provide a balanced diet tailored to their age, size, and activity level. Maine Coons are known for their hearty appetites, so monitor their food intake to prevent obesity. They mostly need a protein-based diet.

      • Exercise: Keep your Maine Coon mentally and physically stimulated with interactive play sessions and plenty of toys every day. We recommend 30 minutes of daily exercise for them to stay happy. A tall scratching post or cat tree will also satisfy their natural instincts to climb and scratch (and protect your furniture!).

      • Healthcare: Schedule regular check-ups with your veterinarian to ensure your Maine Coon remains in optimal health. They are prone to certain genetic conditions, such as heart, kidney and hip diseases, some of which are unfortunately deadly. Early detection is key to managing any potential health issues. Another tip is to request the genetic tests of the parents to ensure your Maine Coon kitten comes from tested and healthy lineage.

Fun Facts about the Maine Coon Cat.

        • The Maine Coon is a vocal cat. They do not sound the same as the typical meow we are used to hearing from cats. Instead they are chattering, chirping, howling and trilling. This is due to their wild, non-domesticated natures.

        • The Maine Coon can be polydactyl. This means that they can be born with extra toes. Around 40% of the Maine Coon cats population has extra toes. It comes from a genetic mutation that is transmitted from a polydactyl cat to its offspring. This is not a health condition and doesn’t endanger them. Actually, these extra toes help these giant cats to have a better balance and agility.

        • The Maine Coon has beautiful and extra-long tails. Its the only cat breed whose tails can grow to 45cm long.

        • A Maine Coon can jump very high! They are known for their excellent leaping skills despite being giant. They can jump as high as 2 metres in the air thanks to their muscular body and strong legs.

        • They have the longest whiskers of all cat breeds; it helps them determine whether they can fit through an opening.

      Conclusion

The Maine Coon cat captivates the hearts of cat lovers worldwide with their majestic appearance, friendly temperament, and intelligence. As cherished members of the family, they bring joy and companionship to households. By understanding their origins, playful personalities, special care requirements, and fun facts, you can make an informed decision about welcoming a Maine Coon cat into your home. Experience the boundless love and rewarding companionship that comes with having a Maine Coon cat by your side.

Explore the growing trend of walking cats on a leash, weighing the benefits and considerations. Learn about the improved health and mental stimulation, while considering your cat’s personality, safety, commitment level, and veterinary consultation. Join the debate of whether walking your cat is a delightful endeavour or potential risk in this comprehensive guide.

      Introduction

Discover the evolving trend of walking cats on a leash, as cat owners seek to provide enriching outdoor experiences for their feline companions. Uncover the highs and lows of this pursuit, from improved health and mental stimulation to the considerations of your cat’s personality, safety, commitment level, and veterinary consultation. Join the debate and make an informed decision on whether walking your cat is a delightful endeavour or a potential risk.

The Benefits of Walking Your Cat Outdoors

      1. Improved Health: Walking your cat on a leash contributes to enhanced physical and mental wellbeing. It helps combat obesity, a prevalent issue among indoor cats, offering a safer alternative to sedentary lifestyles.
      2. Mental Health and Enrichment: Outdoor walks relieve stress, boredom, and provide mental stimulation for your cat. Exploring their surroundings and encountering new experiences builds confidence, leading to happier and behaviourally healthier cats.
      3. Energy and Sleep: Taking young, energetic cats for walks on a harness can improve their sleep patterns and overall energy levels. The outdoor experience allows them to expend energy in a controlled manner.
      4. Enrichment and Enjoyment: Walking on a leash allows cats to explore their wild side safely. It provides an opportunity for shared experiences, fostering a deeper bond between owner and cat, and exposing both to new perspectives.
      5. Natural Instincts and Confidence Boost: Walking your cat aligns with their natural instincts, promoting mental health and cognitive abilities. It boosts their confidence, helping them navigate and explore their surroundings, making them more resilient if accidentally escaping the home.

Considerations for Walking Your Cat Outdoors

      1. Your Cat’s Personality: Consider your cat’s temperament. Bold and outgoing cats may enjoy walks, while more reserved cats may find the outdoor stimulation overwhelming. Evaluate how to provide adequate stimulation within your home for less adventurous kitties.
      2. Walking Environment Safety: Prioritise safety when choosing where to walk your cat. Quiet, secure areas with minimal external stimuli are ideal. Assess potential dangers such as traffic, wildlife, or other animals that may cause stress for your cat.
      3. Commitment Level: Assess your commitment to regular walks. Sudden discontinuation after your cat develops a liking for walks can lead to behavioural issues. Ensure you can consistently meet your cat’s newfound outdoor expectations.

      Understanding Unique Cat Behaviours

Walking a cat differs from walking a dog. Cats have unique behaviours, and you must be prepared for unexpected actions. Gauge your ability to handle emergencies and respond calmly to unforeseen situations during walks.

      Veterinary Consultation and Preventive Measures

Consult your vet before outdoor walks. Discuss potential vaccinations and localised dangers. Vets can advise on additional preventive measures and address concerns about outdoor exposure, enhancing your understanding of potential risks. View the full list of the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) registered veterinary centres in Singapore here.

      Conclusion

The trend of walking cats on leashes offers both benefits and considerations for cat owners. Walking can have positive impacts on physical and mental health, while fostering a stronger bond between cats and their owners. However, it’s crucial to assess your cat’s temperament, prioritize safety, and commit to regular walks. Consulting with a vet and taking preventive measures further enhances the understanding of potential risks. By weighing the pros and cons, you can determine whether walking your cat is a safe and enriching experience for your beloved feline companion.

Discover valuable tips for caring for your aging dogs from a passionate dog lover’s perspective. From the importance of staying active, nutrition tips to alternative therapies.

      Introduction

Meet JT, a dog lover with a deep passion for providing the best care for aging pets. Through his journey of caring for his own senior dog, MaPrao, JT has established a sanctuary for dogs in Northern Thailand. JT has gained valuable insights into the needs of older dogs. In this article, he shares personal experiences and tips to help dog parents in Singapore give their aging dogs the care and love they deserve.

      Keeping Aging Dogs Active

It’s vital for older dogs to stay active, especially if they live in cities where they might only get short walks. I’ve learned some helpful tips for caring for senior dogs. It’s crucial to keep them moving, even as they age. Some dogs need more than just a walk, especially in cities where activities are limited. Teaching them to enjoy swimming early on can be a big help as they get older. This makes it easier for them to move comfortably. Water becomes like a friend, and you can see how happy they are when they paddle around.

      Nutrition Tips for Older Dogs

Let’s talk about nutrition; it’s not that complicated. What’s good for aging people is often good for our dogs. When we replace processed factory food with fresh meat, fruit, & vegetables they get all the essential nutrients they need to stay healthy and happy. This type of diet keeps their tails wagging. Take MaPrao, for example; just the mention of his name gets his tail wagging! Another important aspect that many pet owners overlook is the emotional and mental health of their dog. This is just as important as its physical wellbeing.

Proverbs say: ‘A merry heart is good as medicine, but a broken spirit withers the bones.’ So, to keep your dog healthy, make sure it is happy! Many older dogs seem depressed and have lost the joy and zest for life they once had. Yet it is so important to keep their minds alert and stimulate them with new sensory experiences, as well as maintaining a healthy social life with canine companions. These can bring a new tail-wag and a sparkle to their eyes. A happy and healthy dog is a dog that can sniff out new adventures, even if he slows down.

Challenges of Caring for Aging Dogs

As with humans, our gut is the cornerstone of the immune system and houses a large proportion of our immune cells. Maintaining a healthy gut in old age requires a two-pronged approach. Involving a balanced diet with gut-friendly nutrients like fermented foods, organ meats, omega-3 fats, and prebiotic/probiotic supplements. Additionally, minimize the use of harmful medications and opt for preventative measures and non-invasive therapies when needed. Always consult a veterinarian for personalized advice on specific health issues or care for your aging companion.

      Promoting Gentle and Innovative Care

Caring for seniors is deeply meaningful to me. Sometimes, simplicity is more effective, and gentle care is crucial. Healthcare technology plays a role, with research supporting alternative therapies using light and sound frequencies to alleviate pain, stimulate cell repair, and detoxify without heavy medication. These advancements, successful for humans, now offer promise for our pets. Portable therapeutic devices and lightweight, wearable nanotechnology further demonstrate innovation in health technology. I’ve witnessed dogs experience rejuvenation without resorting to surgery or heavy medication, and it’s a message I’m eager to convey.

Tips for Caring for Older Dogs

          • Feed them nutrient-rich whole foods. Keep them physically active with gentle, low-impact exercise such as swimming.

          • Encourage emotional bonding by spending quality time with your senior dog.

          • Stimulate your dog’s senses with new experiences to get their tail wagging.

        Conclusion

Caring for aging dogs is a meaningful and rewarding journey. By following the insights and tips shared by JT, pet parents can ensure their senior dogs live their golden years to the fullest. From nutrition to emotional well-being and innovative care, there are many ways to enhance the quality of life for aging pets. Let your love and care be a source of comfort and joy for your furry companions as they age gracefully alongside you.

Dive into the fascinating world of fish behaviours. Understand how your fish communicates with you and learn to interpret their signals. Discover helpful insights and guidance to establish a harmonious environment in your aquarium.

        Introduction to Fish Behaviours

Fish behaviour is often overlooked in aquarium keeping, yet understanding their cues can provide insights into their overall well-being. This article explores the intricate world of fish behaviour, decoding their communication signals, and offers guidance on interpreting and responding to their needs. Gain valuable knowledge to foster a strong bond with your aquatic companions in Singapore.

        Body Language Communication

Fish, like humans and many other animals, rely heavily on body language to communicate with one another and with their environment. Their movements, postures, and gestures can convey a wide range of emotions, needs, and intentions. For instance, a fish that is swimming rapidly or darting around the tank may be experiencing stress or anxiety. While, a fish that is calmly exploring its environment is likely feeling comfortable and content.

Observing your fish’s body language can provide valuable insights into their emotional state and well-being. For example, a fish that is constantly hiding or seeking shelter may be feeling threatened or stressed, while a fish that swims to the front of the tank to greet you may be seeking attention or anticipating feeding time.

        Deciphering Feeding Habits and Health

One of the most observable aspects of fish behaviour is their feeding habits. Paying attention to how your fish eat can provide valuable clues about their health and nutritional needs. A sudden loss of appetite or reluctance to eat may indicate underlying health issues, such as digestive problems or parasites. Conversely, overeating can lead to obesity and other health complications. So it’s important to monitor your fish’s feeding habits and adjust their diet accordingly.

Additionally, observing how your fish interact during feeding time can offer insights into their social dynamics and hierarchy within the aquarium. Dominant individuals may assert their authority by monopolising food sources or chasing away weaker tank mates. While, more submissive fish may wait patiently for their turn to eat.

        Social Structures and Tank Environment

Many species of fish are social creatures that form complex hierarchies and social structures within the aquarium. Understanding these social dynamics is essential for maintaining a harmonious and balanced tank environment. Observing interactions between fish can help you identify dominant individuals, aggression, or territorial behaviour. This may require intervention to prevent bullying or injury.

In some cases, introducing new fish to an established community can disrupt the existing social order and lead to conflict or aggression. It’s important to carefully monitor new additions and provide ample hiding places and territory boundaries. This is to minimise stress and aggression among tank mates.

        Environmental Influences on Fish Behaviours

With changes in their environment, fish may exhibit specific behaviours in response to fluctuations in water quality, temperature, or lighting. For example, fish may become more active or hide during water changes or changes in light intensity.

Understanding how environmental factors influence fish behaviour can help you create a stable and comfortable living environment for your aquatic companions. Maintaining optimal water parameters, & adequate filtration and aeration is essential for promoting their health and well-being.

        Breeding Fish Behaviours and Reproduction

Breeding behaviour varies widely among different species of fish. With some exhibiting elaborate courtship rituals and others engaging in more solitary spawning behaviours. Recognizing signs of breeding behaviour can help fish keepers create optimal conditions for successful reproduction and the survival of fry.

Male fish may display vibrant colours, erect fins, or aggressive behaviours to attract mates and establish breeding territories. Female fish may exhibit swollen abdomens or display receptive behaviours, such as hovering near the substrate or displaying their ventral fins, to signal readiness to spawn.

Creating a conducive breeding environment with appropriate water conditions, suitable spawning sites, and ample hiding places for fry can increase the likelihood of successful reproduction and the survival of offspring.

        Recognizing Distress and Health Issues

It’s important for fish keepers to be able to recognize signs of distress or illness in their fish and take appropriate action to address any underlying issues. Common signs of distress may include lethargy, loss of colour, abnormal swimming patterns, or rapid breathing.

Identifying the underlying cause of distress, whether it’s poor water quality, inadequate nutrition, or the presence of parasites or disease, is essential. This enables implementing effective treatment and restoring your fish’s health and vitality.

        Conclusion

By understanding and interpreting your fish’s behaviours, you can ensure a safe and enriching habitat in the aquarium. Strengthen your bond with these aquatic companions by recognizing distress, supporting breeding behaviours, and appreciating their unique personalities. By actively engaging with your fish’s needs, you’ll establish a vibrant aquatic community. One that brings joy and satisfaction to both you and your finned friends.

Discover the importance of keeping pet cats indoors in high-rise Singapore. Learn about the dangers cats face outside and how indoor living can increase their safety, health, bonding.

        Introduction: Keeping Pet Cats Indoors

In high-rise Singapore, allowing your cat to roam outdoors can lead to injuries, neighbourhood disturbances, and strained relationships with neighbours. This article highlights the reasons why keeping pet cats indoors is the best choice. By providing ample resources, play stimulation, attention, and a dedicated space indoors, your cat can lead a fulfilling and safe life.

        The Dangers of the Outdoors

Many cats become roadkill, paralysed, & lose their limbs because of car accidents. Outdoor cats are susceptible to various injuries that lead to medical emergencies & hefty vet bills. They also become food for predators such as snakes & monitor lizards when they wander into unfamiliar territories. By keeping pet cats indoors, you ensure they are protected from these potential hazards.

        Maintaining Good Neighbourly Relations

Outdoor cats disturb the neighbourhood by fighting with other animals, & digging pots & plants. They also enter neighbour’s property as most of us live along a corridor, poop & pee in the open. There are too many cases wherein a roaming pet cat is abused, beaten, thrown from height or killed. Keeping pet cat indoors can lead to a more peaceful coexistence with neighbours. Unless you live in a big landed property with a patio to keep him safe, indoors is where he belongs.

By spending more time together indoors, you engage in interactive play, grooming & cuddling sessions. This enhances the physical & emotional connection between you & your cat.

Health Benefits of Keeping Pet Cats Indoors

Indoor cats tend to live longer & experience fewer health issues. Outdoor cats are more exposed to contagious diseases, parasites & accidents. By allowing your cat to roam, you are exposing him to other cats who may be carriers of viruses. Such as FIV, FELV & be left undefended against unsterilised & territorial cats. Your cat may come home injured, FIV/FELV positive or with open wounds. By keeping pet cats indoors, you’re minimising their exposure to these health risks.

        Complying with Rules and Regulations

In Singapore, condos have their own by-laws set by their MCST councils. An MCST has the right to disallow roaming animals on their premises. If you live in such a condo & allow your cat to roam, your cat is at risk of being trapped & removed by pest controllers. Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a governing body in Singapore, also has a Code of Animal Welfare for pet owners to abide to in regards to Responsible Pet Ownership.

        Controlling Diet and Health

If you allow your cat to roam, you have little control over who feeds him, & what pests he picks up. Perhaps a crunchy cockroach or a wriggly rat, that might affect its health. If your cat is on a specific diet, you will not be able to keep him/her strictly on. They are many cases of unhappy residents poisoning community cats & which your cat may fall victim to.

Strengthening the Bond with Your Cat

Keeping pet cats indoors often forms stronger bonds with their pawrents. By spending more time together indoors, you can engage in interactive play, grooming & cuddling sessions. This enhances the physical & emotional connection between you & your cat. You miss out on them keeping you company while you work & watch tv.

        Conclusion

Providing a stimulating and cat-proofed environment indoors, ensures the safety, health, and happiness of your cat. Keeping pet cats indoors strengthens the bond between you and your feline friend. Improving the quality of your relationship with them. Embrace the joys of indoor living, providing love, attention, and appropriate stimulation, while keeping potential dangers at bay.
